New Release: Chasing Ordinary by Pandora Spocks

Just in time for February 14th, romance queen Pandora Spocks is releasing her latest novel, Chasing Ordinary.  I had the pleasure of beta reading this sweet treat, and I could not have enjoyed it more.  In this season of my life, a little escapism was just what the doctor ordered.  As usual, Spocks brings the heat, but a more vanilla flavor this time around.  If you haven't tried her yet because you're not into the BDSM romance genre, this is a good one to try.  At $0.99 today, you don't want to pass this up.  After all, it isn't Valentine's Day without some sugar.

Here is the blurb:

Red-haired Petey Cavanaugh is a sculptor who welds steel and glass creations. A young widow, she lives on her in-laws’ sheep ranch in Montana where she helps out during the day, working on her art at night.

Looking to raise money to expand the ranch’s business, she gratefully accepts her art school roommate’s offer of a gallery show in Manhattan. It’s been years since she was in the city, and she’s happy to visit her old friend.

Nik is in New York on business. He’s been traveling for nearly a month, enduring endless meetings, attending obligatory dinners, and battling jet-lag. On his way to yet another business dinner, his world collides with Petey's one rainy Manhattan night.

Their mutual attraction is immediate, but Nik’s skeptical. Could it possibly be that this gorgeous, enchanting artist has no idea that he’s Europe’s most eligible prince?

Spending time with Petey is Nik’s first-ever taste of ordinary. What will happen when she finds out the truth?

New Release: Lost and Bound by Pandora Spocks

The queen of classy erotic romance has a new release available for pre-order!  Lost and Bound is the second book in Pandora Spocks' Dream Dominant Collection, which features sweet romances with a liberal dash of bondage and submission.  A starlet in trouble is sent to the wilderness for 6 weeks after a drunken incident.  Not surprisingly, she finds more than trees and fresh air up in Canada.  I will admit to a slight bias, as I helped edit this new addition to the extensive and high-quality Spocks oeuvre.  Check out this excerpt:

Blake expertly angled the small boat to rest beside the tiny dock and killed the motor, tying off his end before jumping out and tying the front end as well.  Then he again offered his hand, helping Shasta climb out of the boat and onto the dock.
She stood taking in the view as he unloaded her things.  The lodge was visible across the water, seemingly closer than it actually was, judging by the ten-minute ride.  If she hadn’t been in such a foul mood, she would have found the place beautiful.  The only sound she could hear was the wind in the tops of the countless pine trees covering the island.  It would be a short climb up to the crest of the island where a log cabin sat.  She could see a stone-surrounded fire pit flanked by a quartet of dark green wooden Adirondack chairs and further away, stretched between two large pines, was a white canvas hammock.
When all her things were on the dock, Blake turned to her.  “Let me take you to the cabin.  There are a few things I need to show you.”
He took off up the hill and Shasta teetered along behind him, carefully avoiding large rocks that were in the way.  “Are you making it?” he called over his shoulder.
“I’ve got this, don’t worry about me,” she muttered.
Blake turned away and grinned to himself.  He was waiting for her when she finally made it up the hill.  “I hope you brought other shoes.”
Out of breath, Shasta put her hands on her hips and nodded.
He unlocked the door and held it open for her to enter the cabin.  She stepped into an open room featuring a seating area in front of a fireplace immediately to her right.  Further into the room, a kitchen was arranged in the back left quarter of the space with a cast iron stove on the back wall and a kitchen table pushed against the right wall down from the fireplace.  Between the fireplace and the kitchen table was a small desk that held some sort of radio equipment.  Shasta peered into an alcove to her left and saw that it was a tiny bedroom.
“Now,” Blake was saying, “the lights run on propane.  You turn this little lever and you can light them with a lighter.  The fridge and the cooktop also run on propane.  Same thing, you turn the knob and then light it with the lighter.  I already lit the pilot on the fridge and it should be fine.”  He indicated a small metal box beneath the kitchen counter.
Wordlessly, Shasta followed him around the room, trying to take in all his instructions.  “Now if you want to bake, or if you’re just cold, you can build a fire in the stove.”  He showed her where to put the wood.  “And there’s always the fireplace.  Wood is stacked outside against the back of the cabin.  I can always bring you more, too.”
He waved at the few kitchen cabinets.  “We’ve stocked the cabinets and the refrigerator but if you need anything, just let me know.”  He headed for the door.  “Water comes from a spring near the front of the island.”
               “Wait.  What?”
               “Water.  You know, to drink?”
Desperately, Shasta searched the room, making a beeline to the sink.  Instead of a faucet, there was a green-painted old-fashioned hand pump.  She worked the handle a few times and a spurt of water came out.  She looked back to him, bewildered.
“Well, you can’t drink that.  Not without boiling it for about ten minutes.  It comes straight out of the lake.  Use it for dishes and things.  You can drink the spring water right out of the ground.”
“Wait a second.  Where’s the bathroom?”
“I was just going to show you.  Follow me.”
Blake headed out the door and Shasta followed along behind him.  He turned down the right side of the cabin, following a narrow trail through the trees.  Shortly, the path opened onto a small clearing and to the right of the clearing was a tiny log structure.  “Here’s your bathroom,” he pointed.
She began to shake her head.  “Oh, no, no, no, no, no,” she murmured.  “There must be some mistake.  I don’t do outhouses.  Does Eddie know about this?” she demanded.
“Who’s Eddie?” Blake returned, picturing the smarmy suit guy.
“No.  Absolutely not.  This is completely unacceptable.  Besides,” she breathed deeply, trying to regain her composure, “where is the shower?”
“Well, some guests bathe in the lake.”  He took in her incredulous expression and continued.  “On the other hand, we do have a solar shower.  I’ll show you.”
Shasta followed him down the other side of the cabin, to the place where the tiny bedroom jutting out from the main cabin made a little sheltered corner.  A post was situated in the corner with a pulley rigged to the top.
“This is a solar shower.”  Blake held up a large flat rectangular vinyl pouch that was clear on one side and black on the other.  The clear side had a large round valve and there was a handle on one end.  The other end had clear tubing attached and at the end of the tubing was a tiny shower head.
“You fill this up with water, seal the valve, and lay it out in the sun.  The dock is a good place.”  He watched as Shasta held her forehead with the palm of one hand, gaping at him in disbelief.  “Anyway, when you’re ready for a shower, you hang it up here,” he indicated the pulley, “and just shower away.  The spruce trees right here make for privacy, although you shouldn’t have any folks out on the lake, seeing as how you’ve rented out the whole place.”
Wordlessly, Shasta turned and hobbled back to the front of the cabin, sinking into one of the Adirondack chairs.  Blake followed, hands in his pockets, uncertain whether or not to continue the tour.  She glanced up at him, deciding to change tacks.
“Listen,” she smoothed, “we seem to have gotten off on the wrong foot.”  She pasted on her dazzling Shasta Pyke smile.  “Obviously, there’s been some kind of mistake.”  Standing, she approached him, pushing her glasses back up onto her head and fixing him with soft brown eyes.
“Here’s the thing.”  She reached out to stroke his arm, biting her lower lip provocatively.  “I can’t stay here.  And you don’t want me here, not really.  The place is already paid for.  Just,” she stepped closer, brushing her breasts against his arm, “maybe you could drive me someplace where I can get a cab or an Uber or something, and I’ll be out of your hair.”  She wrinkled her nose and winked.  “What do you say?”
A slow smile spread across Blake’s face.  “What do I say?”  He laughed lightly, shaking head.  “I say, you’re a piece of work, lady.”  With that, he turned.  “I’ll leave you to it, then.”
“Wait!” she shouted after him.  “You can’t just leave me here!”
He waved over his head and didn’t turn around.
“Come back here!  You come back here right now!”
Wordlessly, he cast off from the dock and pushed the boat away from the shallow water.
“What about my bags?  They need to be taken to the cabin!”
“And it will be dark soon.  So you might want to get on that,” Blake chuckled.
Shasta was on the dock by now and she stomped her foot, fists balled at her sides.  “Do you know who I am?” she screamed.
“You look to me like a little brat who needs her ass tanned,” he fired back.
She shrieked unintelligibly and threw a rock at the boat.  She missed by a mile and the rock plonked harmlessly into the water.
Blake laughed again, started the engine, and headed back to the lodge.

If you love a hot romance, Pandora Spocks is your girl.

Book Review: Charms and Witches by Herb Mallette

Charms and Witches lives up to its title. It's truly one of the most charming books I've read in some time.

In a land where magic is real but somewhat rare, Cirie is a young charm maker eking out a living, struggling to pay down a debt incurred during her late master’s terminal illness. Though the grief and debt are a lot to carry, she manages to do so without bowing under the weight. Her somewhat monotonous existence becomes a lot more interesting when a traveling stranger named Lanton appears at the inn where Cirie lives and works. Immediately taken with one another, affection blooms over a board game and deepens over the revelations of Lanton’s secret mission. When the witch queen finds out what he is up to, it will take a remarkable love and determination to produce a happy ending. It is something of a romance within a romance, bright and diverting.

The author has created a fun and detailed world without resorting to dumps of exposition. The magic is described in a lovely yet unpretentious fashion. He has deftly drawn a cast of characters with whom you can't help wishing to spend more time, and for whom you can't help wishing for happiness. Even the money lender seems like an okay guy. Though the world is fantastical in its way, the characters behave like real people. There are no contrived conflicts between the romantic leads, which was a relief to me, as I am no fan of comedies of errors. It's also a bit of an achievement in this day and age to create an engrossing book containing no explicit sex or gory violence.

I loved this book, and I cannot recommended this author highly enough.

Upcoming Release: Brother Mine by Jolie Mason

Jolie Mason is one of my favorite indie authors.  She introduced me to a subgenre that I cannot believe I had never heard of: scifi romance.  My fellow nerdettes, she is one of us.  I love the way she combines the hard edges of space and battles and danger with the softness of true love.  What can I say?  I'm a highly rational softie.

I loved her other series, and I was super excited to find out she was going to try something new.  I was even more excited when she let me take a crack at beta reading and helping edit Brother Mine.  The world she has created here is dark and complex, but with rays of hope.  A brotherhood of assassins, a social justice warrior willing to risk her life for an oppressed alien minority, ugly politics, heartbreaking pasts: Mason is a fountain of ideas, all of them good.  The main characters are tough, smart, and charming.  The story moves quickly.  This book is an awful lot of fun, and with summer coming, don't you need to stock up on some escapism to take on vacation?  I thought so.

Purchase Brother Mine on Amazon, Ibooks, or Kobo.

Check out the author's blog, and follow her on twitter.

Blurb:

Mal Renata was born with the proverbial silver spoon in her mouth, but it never stopped her from becoming the voice of the Braxian people. As an activist fighting off mankind’s inevitable slide into cruelty and prejudice, she wants to stop the Scourge bill from becoming law, but how can she do that, if the bill’s supporters keep dying? Public outcry wants someone to pay, so she intends to give them someone.

Until she tracks down, Adame Sacha, a Braxian freedman and one of the notorious Brother Assassins, she thinks the brotherhood is her problem. Instead, she finds they may be the best allies she could hope for. Together, she and Adame search for those who are eager to profit from the suffering of the Brax, and they track their prey in a world where lives are held cheaply, but death is expensive.

They may be able to elude the dangers of his world for awhile, but they can’t run from the attraction to each other.  No matter what their differences.

Author Bio:

Jolie Mason lives, works and plays on the mighty Mississippi in the infamous New Madrid, Missouri. Coming home again has allowed her time to write and chase the dream she's always harbored in her heart, making people smile with fairytales.

Jolie has been a fangirl to almost every scifi franchise out in her lifetime, and follows every possible scifi romance author out there. Nothing has ever captured her attention like scifi, and she's put all that day dreaming to good use.

She began publishing Home in the Stars in 2015, and has since added a novella series called the 47th Lancers to that number.  Jolie is currently working on two brand new scifi series, including the Brother Assassins.

Excerpt:

 “Where's your boss?"
The brother before her nodded to the space behind her, and gracefully moved to stand, allowing her room to stand as well, though not as gracefully. "What the hell did you give me?"
"A simple sedative. That is all."
She rubbed the back of her neck. "Yeah, well, it feels like a fifth of whiskey."
"I apologize for your discomfort."
Taken aback, she looked closely at the man. He towered over her and had the lean build of all his kind, but he was dressed as a freedman. Soft, comfortable jacket, trousers and the bands on his shirt that indicate he was not owned or allowed to be owned. There would be two tattoos on each arm underneath as well, to prevent his enslavement. It was a rare thing to meet a Braxian freedman.
"You are a most fortunate man. How long have you been free?"
Surprise jumped to his dark, blinking eyes. "Ten Standard, Suran."
Her lips tightened. "There is no need for sarcasm."
"Pardon?" A slight smile touched his lips.
"Does suran not mean 'most honored one'?"
"It does indeed. It is a term of respect."

She put her hands on her hips. "For royalty that no longer exist. I know sarcasm. I speak it fluently in multiple languages. You just called me princess in a condescending tone and patronized me, thinking I wouldn't notice."

Review of Redemption's Requiem by Jolie Mason

I love Jolie Mason's blend of sci-fi and romance.  Spaceships, mechs, war, and love . . . how can you go wrong?  In her new release, Redemption's Requiem, Mason wraps up (for now, at least) the universe in which her Lancers Series resides.

This swan song focuses on Cat and Murphy of the Redemption.  Cat is a brilliant pilot with a lot of healing to do, and Murphy is the ship's captain who wants to help that along.  There is a big bad weapon to go after, and it's going to take a bunch of our old Lancers friends to go after it (Hopper, Dahlia, etc.).  Both the mission and romance plotlines move quickly and come to satisfying conclusions.  Mason once again brings good, reliable outer space fun.

If you've ever read any of Mason's work, this is one not to miss.  If you haven't, and if you liked Battlestar or Firefly, then what the heck are you waiting for?

Book Review: Rannigan's Redemption 2: Running Rogue by Pandora Spocks

Pandora Spocks is out tomorrow with her much-anticipated sequel, Rannigan’s Redemption 2: Running Rogue.  She left us with quite the cliffhanger last year, when Part 1 ended with a rift between Maggie and Michael just after they finally gave in to their mutual attraction.  Part 2 picks up right where the first installment left off.

I have to confess I have limited patience for the “A-hole Rich Guy” subgenre of romance novels, but Spocks once again manages to overcome my preconceived notions. It helps that Michael experiences actual consequences for his ridiculousness, and that Maggie never so much as entertains the notion of putting up with his misbehavior.  Maggie nevertheless shows her heart of gold when she is a friend to him when it really counts. Between her kindness, toughness, and potty mouth, Maggie may be my favorite romance main character of all time.

My favorite part of the book starts in about the 5th inning, when retired baseball player Bobby makes his appearance.  I don't want to give too much away. I'll just say that he's awesome, and I look forward to seeing more of him in book 3. Happy reading!

Book Review: Redemption Burning by Jolie Mason

I really enjoy all of Jolie Mason’s stuff. I adore her universe and the way she has built it up piece by piece over the many stories in both her series. I love the way the outside forces affect the romances and how the series are becoming intertwined. This new release, Redemption Burning, is no exception. It drops tomorrow, 2/08, and sci-fi romance buffs should pre-order now.

In the latest addition to the adventures of a team of mercenaries with hearts of gold, just as occasionally happens in real life, grief and romance co-mingle for Briar and Hercules. They juggle mourning their friend Beezer, accepting their blossoming feelings for each other, and fighting the evil alien hordes. You know, like you do. This is an exciting, heartwarming, and satisfying sci-fi romance, full of love and mechs and explosions. I’ve come to expect nothing less from Jolie Mason. So get on that Kindle and start downloading already!

Author Highlight: Pandora Spocks

Is there a better pen name possible for a writer of literary erotic romance than Pandora Spocks?  In her real life, she lives in Florida and aspires to one day own a giraffe.  She has been spinning tales in her head for years but only recently has started sharing them with the rest of us, and we are certainly lucky she has.  Her brand new release (reviewed below) will join her first novel, Luke and Bella: Two Streets Over, already available on Amazon.

I was lucky enough to receive an advance review copy of her new book, Rannigan's Redemption Part 1: Resisting Risk.  The first volume of a trilogy, it focuses on a newly minted lawyer named Maggie and her boss, Michael Rannigan.  Rannigan is something of a player and doesn't know quite what to make of just how much he likes Maggie.

This book is excellent.  I don't even really like romance novels all that much, but this one is really well-done.  The writing is clean, and the characters are vibrant and interesting.  The sex is explicit and super hot, fyi, and the emotions are strong.  Spocks definitely knows how to bring the spice and tug on the heartstrings at the same time.  I love how confident, competent, and honest Maggie is, and I enjoy Michael's sweet side that only Maggie seems to bring out in him.  The ending definitely leaves me anxious for the next installment.  I am assured by the author that Part 2 is well on its way!

If you're looking for something to keep you warm over the holidays, Rannigan's Redemption fits the bill.  Happy reading!

Author Highlight: Suzie Jay

You guys, if you like sweet romances that aren't too dirty, Suzie Jay is your girl.  She's a mom, a teacher, and Australian, and a darn good writer to boot.

I read her novel Walk on the Wild Side some time back, and I was hooked on her quirky characters and clean writing style.  Walk on the Wild Side is an engrossing, entertaining tale of survival and reinvention during and after a nasty divorce.  It hits all the right notes: the sympathetic female protagonist, the suitably obnoxious ex-husband, the terrific friends, and, of course, the hot new man.  The tone is suitably snarky, which provides a modern touch.

Just this past week, she released the timely holiday romance Merry Christmas Eve, and I was lucky enough to get an advance review copy.  This novella is the perfect little Christmas present.  Eve and Grayson meet cute while stranded in an airport, and the cuteness only increases with the introduction of Grayson's children, Max and Noelle.  Eve helps to bring them the joy of Christmas while finding the family she's been longing for.  This is a super sweet, super fun read, perfect for travel or a break from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.  It will put a smile on your face, and you'll swear you can smell a Christmas tree. It's perfect airport/airplane reading.

If you're stressed and need a breather this holiday season, check out Suzie Jay. She's even got a few children's books if the kiddos need a distraction. Happy reading!

Author Highlight: Guy Bailey

G.S. Bailey is an Australian farmer and indie author of romance novels.  With his new release, Kangaroo Crossing, he has completed his Mystery Loves Romance series  which includes a Man for Kate: Remains of a Local Girl, A Man for Claire: Secrets of the Widow Mulvane, A Woman for Jason: The Soccer Field Bones, A Woman for Blake: Lonely Desert Grave, A Woman for Matthew: The Trelor Sect Killings and A Man for Juliette: the Fontaine Children.

Guy Bailey’s books are super fun: a relaxing and entertaining escape from real life.  The main characters are always vivid as well as easy to root for and identify with.  His leading men are always good guys, and his leading ladies are always strong and beautiful.  The supporting characters are interesting and sympathetic, and the mysteries are engaging and well-paced.  With his books, you have the bonus of getting to take a little trip to Australia and learn a bit about its landscape and culture.

Kangaroo Crossing, his brand new release, wraps up a multi-faceted case that winds through a number of his novels, but you don’t necessarily have to read the others first.  Journalist Blake Malone is investigating a serial killer, and his journey takes him to Madeline’s rural ranch.  Her mother was murdered by the killer years ago, and both of them long to give closure to the families of the killer’s other victims.  Watching them fall in love as they work together is a pleasure, and the depictions of Australian ranch life add a wonderful sense of adventure.  If you are traveling this holiday season, or you need a break from the family and the stress and all the hustle and bustle, I definitely recommend Kangaroo Crossing.

Author Highlight: Jolie Mason

Jolie Mason is an indie writer of sci-fi romance / space opera.  This genre is an amazing amount of fun, and this particular author is especially enjoyable.  She has created a complex, multi-faceted universe into which the installments of two different series fit as precisely as puzzle pieces.  I have read 4 out of her 6 books, including her new release, and I’m chomping at the bit to get to the other two.

Jolie Mason grew up just off the Mississippi River on the New Madrid fault line, which she says may explain her proclivity for thinking disaster movies are comedy. She's returned there to live with her three children and a menagerie of strays and pets that just show up.  She calls herself a gamer mom, which is different from a soccer mom in that she drives a police car and not a mini van.

Her work is predicated on this question: What if society never really changed? What if all the technology in the world didn't change a thing, but only made the sandbox bigger? That theme carries through both her series: Home in the Stars and The 47th Lancers.

The Home in the Stars Series (Home is the Sailor, Home from the Hill, and Home from the Sea) follows the loves and adventures of the rotating crew members of a particular starship, each of them fascinating in his or her own way.  The 47th Lancers Series (Riding Redemption, Redemption Lost, and the brand spanking new Seeking Redemption) follows the exploits of a company of mercenaries with hearts of gold.  The denizens of her universe live under various threats, including greedy criminals, invading aliens, and their own increasingly desperate Imperial government. The main characters are uniformly both charmingly sympathetic and precisely portrayed.

Her new release, Seeking Redemption, has both action and romance, mortal danger as well as family drama.  It combines the hardness of science fiction with the softness of a kiss in a very appealing way.  There are enough ties to the other books that you can see the connections, but not so many that you can’t read this one without reading the others.  The novel takes place on a planet whose population faces threats from within and without and features a mech pilot and a planetary leader who share a passion for more than just protecting the planet.  I always love a romance where the two parties are both equally competent and equally in need of love.  Jolie Mason’s romantic leads totally fit the bill.

Basically, if you like mechs with your kissing or kissing with your spaceships, you owe it to yourself to check out Jolie Mason.  Happy reading!

Book review: Kismet by Shaheen Darr

I was lucky enough to receive an advance review copy of Shaheen Darr’s new novel Kismet: A Desi Rhapsody in London, due for release today
.
The novel follows the fates of the members of two Pakistani immigrant families in the United Kingdom.  As an anglophile who married into an Indian family who immigrated to the U.S. before my husband was born, I was interested as soon as I saw the lovely cover, designed by Eeva Lancaster.  The deft treatment of the cultural conflicts between immigrant parents and children, as well as the tension between assimilation and cultural preservation, was both realistic and emotionally effective.  I also enjoyed the way she structured the novel, allowing us to see the events from various points of view.

The narratives are quite touching, exploring such themes as romance, betrayal, heartbreak, depression, tragedy, remorse, redemption, and, of course, kismet.  The idea of fate is a fascinating one to me, one that sometimes allows people to make sense of the events of their lives, and one that carries through all the storylines of this novel.

Kismet is a lovely book, one I highly recommend for its skillful writing, lyrical descriptions, emotional impact, and charming characters.  It is a book that will follow you out the door, like the smell of your mother’s house.

Review of Her Master Protector by Sandra S. Kerns

My writing friend Sandra S. Kerns has a new release today, a mystery romance called Her Master Protector.  If you want to see how the pros of self-publishing do it right, you need to check her out.  Her novels are all entertaining and well-crafted.  The woman knows what she is doing.

First things first, you should know that the word "Master" in the title is there not in the bondage sense but because Masters is the name of a family in this series of books.   It is not Fifty Shades of Murder.

This is the last of the series, but the characterization and writing are so good that I didn't have any trouble jumping right into this one without knowing all the back story.  She fills in the background just enough.  It's kind of fun to discover a series at the end, because then you've got a whole lot more books ready to go without having to wait.  On its own, this is a fun and satisfying ride.

The main characters are both strong, smart, and adorable.  They work together to protect a witness, solve a mystery, and keep each other physically and emotionally safe.  That teamwork makes for a very enjoyable book.

If you've never read an indie author before, she's a good one to start with.  Or, of course, you could start with me.  Then buy hers. ;)
